De Havilland Canada DHC-1 Chipmunk is a two-seat (tandem) trainer designed as a replacement for the classic Tiger Moth biplane. It was developed by de Havilland in Canada but manufactured in Canada, England and Portugal.

The first test flight was conducted in 1946 and the type was built in 1284 units until 1956.

The Chipmunk was used as the first primary airplane by no less than 22 national Air Forces, i.a. in Denmark, Canada and England. The Royal Air Force (UK) used the type right up to 1996 when an around the globe-flight with two Chipmunk was conducted as a final performance.

The aircraft is considered by many pilots to be a dream to fly and with a very nice rudder harmony - perhaps hence its nickname: "A Poor Man´s Spitfire".

This individual, part of the Västerås Aviation Museum, is a de Havilland Canada DHC-1 Chipmunk 22 (RAF: Chipmunk T.Mk 10) manufactured in 1952 in England with s / n C1-0756-1205 and thus is a real military trainer.

It was delivered directly to Sweden after completing service by the RAF in 1975 and has the following history:

• 1952-75, RAF WP876 / 12 (Deliv. 1952-10-10)

• 1975, to Alw-Air Knivsta / Hovås (reg. SE-FNP 1975-09-08)

• 1978-ff, to the Aerobatic Society, Uppsala (based in Västerås since 2016)
